Hawaii Beat

Stroke play rained out, continues today

Today will be a marathon 36 holes for the 11 golfers in the Hawaii State Women's Amateur Stroke-Play Championship.

Yesterday's second round at the Mid-Pacific Country Club was postponed due to weather, forcing tournament organizers to reschedule today's play for two rounds.

Defending champion Stephanie Kono carded a 2-over 74 in Tuesday's first round for a two-stroke lead. Tied for second were Mari Chun, Rachel Kyono and Kayla Morinaga.

Aloha Stadium to kick off 10th year of 'Stars'

Aloha Stadium has announced that its Stadium Stars program to train amateur sports announcers is back for its 10th year.

The program -- free and open to the public -- allows participants hands-on education and experience in live sports broadcasting of high school events played at the stadium.

Stadium Stars is offering a brief informational meeting Tuesday from 6 to 7 p.m. at Aloha Stadium. Reservations are required, and can be made by calling Aloha Stadium spokesman Patrick Leonard at 486-9549. Local sports communications professionals are scheduled to speak.

Participants will learn the fundamentals of live sports broadcasts, then move on to calling actual games.

Stadium Stars was created in 1994 by Aloha Stadium and hall of fame broadcaster Les Keiter, the stadium's former spokesman.
