Dolphins in the sand

Try sculpting a dolphin from sand during the Wild Dolphin Sand Sculpture Contest taking place 9:30 a.m. to noon Saturday at Keawakapu Beach in Wailea, Maui, as part of Wild Dolphin Day.

It's free to enter and all participants will receive a 20-by-30-inch wild dolphin poster, with a chance to win prizes in categories including: "Most Realistic Dolphin," "Capturing the Spirit of Wild Dolphins," "Most Humorous Dolphin Sculpture," "Best Overall Entry by an Individual" and "Best Overall Entry by a Family or Group."

Register at the north end of Keawakapu Beach by the Mana Kai Resort. A bucket and a shovel will be provided. Judging is at 11:30 a.m.

Other events include a free talk and slideshow, "Maui County's Wild Dolphins," by Pacific Whale Foundation researchers at the Ocean Science Discovery Center in Ma'alaea, from 7 to 8 p.m. Saturday. Learn about the foundation's studies of wild dolphins, and take home a free guide, "Watching Hawaii's Toothed Whales and Dolphins."
