Kahala Clambake dinner is back

Tuesday nights are clambake nights all this month at the Plumeria Beach Cafe at the Kahala Mandarin Oriental.

The annual Kahala Clambake Dinner Buffet returns this week, showcasing its signature item, a wok-steamed seafood laulau (clams, crab, corn and asparagus steamed with seaweed and wrapped in ti leaves). This year, the clams are marinated in kelp and sake before steaming.

Also on the menu are braised beef shoulder with crispy Maui onions and the Pulehu-style grilled chicken.

Cost is $33, $16.50 for children. Call 739-8760.

Corporate honors

Brendan Mahoney, executive chef of the Waikiki Beach Marriott Resort and Spa, has been awarded the 2003 Award of Culinary Excellence for the national Marriott chain.

Mahoney is one 12 chefs chosen from more than 750 properties for the ACE Award.

Chefs were judged on criteria including creativity, culinary achievement, leadership and training of others.

Wine and beer at Indigo

Indigo Eurasian Cuisine celebrates the third anniversary of its Wrath of Grapes weekly wine tastings 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday.

An international selection of more than 20 wines will be offered alongside dishes from chef Glenn Chu. Cost is $35.

If beer is more your thing, Indigo is hosting a Sam Adams Beer Dinner, 6:30 p.m. Aug. 25. Lili Hess, international sales manager of the Boston Beer Co., will serve as host.

The menu: Chilled Steamed Shrimp on Fresh Tomato and Pasta (with Summer Ale), Island Grown Baby Lettuces with Fennel (Boston Lager), Persian Saffron and Chili-Spiced Shortribs (Octoberfest) and Cheese Cake with Lemon Verbena and Dragon Fruit Compote (Hard Core Cider).

Cost is $48 per person in advance or $52 at the door. Reservation deadline is noon Aug. 20. Call 521-2900.
