Pearl City takes junior baseball state title

Alika Pruett pitched a four-hitter and went 2-for-4 at the plate to lead Pearl City past Ewa 12-3 in the Hawaii State Little League Junior Tournament for 13-14 year-olds in Hilo.

Pearl City scored four runs in the third inning and never looked back. The team advances to the West Regionals in Forest Grove, Ore., starting Aug. 4, with a chance to make it to the Junior World Series in Taylor, Mich.

Hawaii takes lead in girls Americas Cup golf

Team Hawaii leads after the first day of the Girls Junior Americas Cup at Royal Colwood Golf Club in Victoria, B.C.

Three Hawaii girls teamed up for a total of 219, led by Mari Chun with a 71. Kayla Morinaga shot 72, while Kimberly Kim had a 76.

British Columbia is three shots back at 222.

Hawaii Select wins tournament opener

The Hawaii Select girls basketball All-Star division team, coached by Chico Furtado, won its opening game in the American Roundball Corporation National Championships in Las Vegas.

McKinley High School's Chelsea Sato scored 14 points, while Radford's Tereva Moore and Kalaheo's Shanadee Canon added 10 points each in a 43-31 victory over Evergreen Express (Wash.).

Vince Goo fund-raiser set for July 31

Former University of Hawaii women's basketball coach Vince Goo will be honored at a fund-raiser July 31 at the Stan Sheriff Center.

"Thank Goo for the Memories" will recognize the retired coach's contributions with proceeds going to an endowed scholarship in his name. The event starts at 5:30 p.m. and includes live entertainment, a silent auction and food and drink and a program honoring Goo.

Table prices range from $1,000-$5,000. Individual tickets can be purchase for $100. Separate donations will also be accepted. Fund-raiser forms are available online at www.hawaiiathletics.com or by calling Michelle Kaminaga at 956-4325.

Connecticut lacrosse team in town

The Aloha Youth Lacrosse Association along with the Guilford Youth Lacrosse Association of Connecticut will conduct free clinics this weekend at Kapiolani Park.

The clinic is open to boys and girls ages 7 to 18 and runs from 2-4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Participants need to bring a mouthguard. Sticks will be provided.

After the clinics, the AYLA all-stars will play a GYLA team in an exhibition game. The teams will play again Aug. 3 at Vidinha Stadium on Kauai.

Pearl City alumni tournament for all schools

The Pearl City High School volleyball program will be hosting an alumni tournament -- for the alumni of all schools.

The fund-raiser tournament is open to graduates of all Hawaii schools, but all players on respective teams must have graduated from the same school, no exceptions.

The tournament is set for Aug. 7, with a $60 entry fee per team. There will be men's and women's divisions. Teams will be accepted into the field on a first-come basis. USVA rules will be applied.
