Maryellen Hooper: Comedian will be featured through Saturday.

Hopper hits Sharkey's

Los Angeles based comedian Maryellen Hooper headlines six stand-up showcases today through Saturday at Sharkey's.

Hooper's persona has been described as "if Lucille Ball and Dick Van Dyke had a baby girl," as she deftly comments on the travails of being a woman and takes the audience along on a delightfully loopy ride.

Her first comedy CD, "Dignity Under Duress," was recorded live at the legendary Ice House Comedy Club in Pasadena.

She's made many TV appearances, most notably on "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno," Lifetime's "Girl's Night Out," A&E's "Evening at the Improv" and her Comedy Central "Lounge Lizards Special."

Shows start at 8:30 p.m. daily through Saturday, with additional 10:30 p.m. shows Friday and Saturday. Tickets are $12. Reserve at 531-HAHA (4242). Sharkey's is at 2080 Kalakaua Ave. (next to Niketown in All-Star Hawaii). Parking is free.

Farm Fair heads west

The Hawaii State Farm Fair has a new home this year, moving to Kapolei, at the corner of Farrington Highway and Fort Barrette Road.

The event opens Friday, and runs two consecutive weekends (Friday to Sunday and Aug. 5 to 8), giving city slickers an opportunity to enjoy the Hawaii Agriculture Experience, livestock exhibits, Country Market, Meadow Gold petting zoo, orchid and plant show, plus food booths, and for the thrill seekers, E.K. Fernandez rides and games.

The Hawaii Beef Industry Council will serve free samples of grilled beef starting at noon Saturday, while supplies last.

Event hours are 6 p.m. to midnight Fridays and Aug. 5, and noon to midnight Saturdays and Sundays. Admission is $3; $2 for children under 12 (children under 3 are free). Parking is $2.

Meatless life is vegetarian topic

For many vegetarians, the decision to give up meat is much more than a matter of diet. It involves a different approach to the world, says Kenneth Shapiro, who will address the Vegetarian Society of Hawaii next week.

Shapiro -- executive director of the Society and Animals Forum, editor of Society and Animals: Journal of Human-Animal Studies and co-editor of the Journal of Applied Animal Welfare Science -- speaks on "The Psychology of the Dinner Plate: Vegetarianism versus Carnism," at 7 p.m. mext Wednesday at the Ala Wai Golf Course Clubhouse, and on Maui at 7 p.m. Aug. 7 at the Seventh-Day Adventist Church in Kahului.

Admission is free and refreshments will be served.
