Hawaii Beat

Wong, Fonoimoana beat Lambert, Kiraly

Eric Fonoimoana and Punahou graduate Kevin Wong won the AVP Hermosa Beach Open yesterday with a 22-20, 21-19 victory in Hermosa Beach, Calif., over Karch Kiraly and Mike Lambert, another Punahou alum.

Fonoimoana and Wong won the 2003 Manhattan Open title in the first event they played together, then went 18 tournaments without making a final. The team went through the Hermosa Beach tournament with a 6-0 record and split the $20,000 prize.

"It's a great relief," Wong said. "It's been a long summer, but this makes it a little shorter."

Hawaii teens advance with win over Arizona

Hawaii scored three runs in the sixth inning yesterday to beat Arizona 10-9 at the Western Region Big League (ages 16-18) tournament in San Bernardino, Calif.

Mason Suga had a home run among his three hits and Matt Patterson got the win in relief.

Hawaii needs a win over Southern California today and another tomorrow to earn a spot in the World Series in Easley, S.C.
