» Benny Agbayani was fined &YEN50,000 ($463) last week for his participation in a bench-clearing brawl against the Kintetsu Buffaloes. Agbayani was in the dugout when Kintetsu pitcher Kevin Bierne questioned the call on a pitch to Matt Franco, who shouted a few uncomplimentary words about Bierne's performance, according to www.japanbaseballdaily.com. Bierne confronted Franco at the end of the inning, but Agbayani and pitcher Dan Serafini jumped off the bench to come to Franco's defense and a brawl ensued, with Agbayani knocking the Kintetsu third-base coach to the ground. The Web site reported that it was the first time three players were kicked out of the same game since 2001.
Agbayani got his revenge the next night, however, blasting home runs in the eighth and ninth innings to beat Kintetsu 9-3. Franco, who was not fined but was given a severe reprimand, went 3-for-4 in the game.
» Arizona pitching coach Mark Davis tried to lift Brandon Villafuerte's spirits after a disastrous outing this week.
Villafuerte retired the first two Houston batters of the eighth before allowing a single to Brad Ausmus. He then fell behind pitcher Andy Pettitte 2-0 and things came unraveled. Pettitte walked, as did the next two batters -- Villafuerte missed the strike zone 12 straight times -- to force in a run.
"After the first two pitches to Pettitte he was trying to throw the ball into the strike zone," Davis told MLB.com. "Before that, he was throwing the baseball. He needs to get back to mechanics, think about balance, balance and throw to the glove. The positive thing is he retired the first two guys in the inning. We have to build on that."
Villafuerte agreed.
"I don't know what happened," Villafuerte told the East Valley Tribune. "I just lost it. I released it early, released it late, got behind, dragged my arm. ... I was basically a head case out there. But it's something that's correctable."
» Shane Komine (Kalani) was placed on the DL on July 19.
