Jon Ikegami's "Bunch" is a laminated wood piece that was among the works selected for the "Artists of Hawaii 2004" exhibit by juror Janet Koplos.

Home grown art

For Janet Koplos, senior editor of Art in America magazine, jurying "Artists of Hawaii 2004" enabled her to see works different than what she's accustomed to in New York, where her magazine is based.

In her juror's statement, Koplos wrote, "What did I see here? A huge range of works that interested me, but little of certain kinds of art common in New York. Hawaii is obviously a more pleasant place to live than New York, so I didn't see much angry or cynical work, nor did I find much vulgarity or harshness."

Instead, she mostly found works "that dealt subtly or abstractly with such widespread human interests as relationships, nature, order, decoration, tradition, crafts- manship, aging and decay, reproduction, emotional states, domestic environments, stories, and abstractions."

In all, 524 artists submitted 1272 works for review in this all-media show put on annually by the Honolulu Academy of Arts. Of that vast number, 61 artists were selected, and 96 pieces of art are currently on display at the academy's Henry R. Luce Gallery.

"Artists of Hawaii 2004" continues through Aug. 1. The academy is open 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Tuesdays to Sundays and 1 to 5 p.m. Sundays. Admission is $7 general; $4 for seniors, students and military; and free for children 12 and under. Call the academy at 532-8700 for more information.
