24-hour relay to aid
battle against cancer

The American Cancer Society's Relay for Life will open with a "Survivor's Walk" honoring cancer survivors and caregivers at 6:30 tonight at Sandy Beach.

Relay team members will walk or run around the track until 7 p.m. tomorrow in the all-day, all-night event to fight cancer.

Food and entertainment will be featured on the beach, including "Royal Treatment" massages and foot soaks, quality-of-life presentations, "make and take" craft projects, Hawaiian games for children and other activities.

Participants will be able to talk and walk all night or relax with friends in tents or under the stars.

The public is invited to join Island 98.5 in a celebration of the 20th hour of the Sandy Beach Relay from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. tomorrow. Brother J or Puunui will do live call-ins to help celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Relay for Life.

The first 24-hour event was held in 1985 in Washington state.

Hawaii's event expanded this year to 26 communities throughout the state.

Each relay features a core activity, such as a wellness center, and a wall of memories, luminaria lighting ceremony and a survivor's tent.

All money raised through Relay for Life goes to support the American Cancer Society's mission to eliminate cancer through research and education and save lives.

For more information, call the society's Honolulu office, 595-7544.
