A man dressed as Spiderman finished the Tinman triathlon Sunday at Kapiolani Park. He said the swim was the toughest part, pointing out that spiders rarely swim.




Hawaii big leaguers advance to regionals

Matt Haasenritter hit a grand slam in the first inning to spark Hawaii to a 10-3 victory over Washington in the championship game of the Big League District 1 Tournament yesterday in Poulsbo, Wash.

Cody Urasaki picked up the pitching win in relief of starter Kulea Bondallian.

The Hawaii team advances to the West Regional in San Bernadino, Calif., and opens play against Arizona on Friday. The regional winner moves on to the Big League World Series set for July 30-Aug. 7 in Easley, SC.

Kuebler released by Blazers

Former University of Hawaii basketball player Michael Kuebler was released by the Portland Trail Blazers last week.

Kuebler was listed on the Blazers' summer league roster earlier this month and participated in the team's mini-camp last week. But he was among five players released last Thursday as the team trimmed its roster in advance of the Reebok Rocky Mountain Revue, which opened on Friday in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Former Brigham Young-Hawaii guard Yuta Tabuse is playing for the Phoenix Suns' summer league team.

Acia wins senior club pro title

Hilo's Rodney Acia protected his first-round lead by shooting a 1-under-par 71 yesterday to win the Aloha Section PGA/Callaway Golf Senior Club Professional Championship at the Mauna Lani Resort on the Big Island.

Acia's 36-hole total of 144 also earned him one of three berths in the National Senior CPC set for Oct. 21-24 in Port St. Lucie, Fla.

Dennis Rose, Ron Kiaaina Jr., and Rich Fite finished regulation tied for second at 148. Rose birdied the third playoff hole to earn the second qualifying berth. Kiaaina parred the same hole to finish third. Fite is the first alternate for the national championship.

Island Movers games canceled

The Hawaii Island Movers baseball games with the Santa Clara Red Sox have been canceled. The teams were scheduled to play a series Thursday to Sunday at Les Murakami Stadium.

The Island Movers host a four-team tournament starting July 29. Joining the Movers in the tournament will be the Sapporo University All-Stars, Osaka Gakuin University and the San Mateo Bulldogs.

UH swimming and diving team signs eight

The University of Hawaii swimming and diving team has signed six swimmers and two divers for next season.

Joining the team will be men's swimmers Thomas Winkler, Kurtis Miller, Grame Tozer, Grzegorz Mroz and women's swimmers Mackenzie Downing and Cassandra Hunt. The divers are Rui Wang and Mats Wiktorsson.

Swedes to join HPU tennis team

Cecilia Lundberg and Josefine Paulie of Sweden have signed with the Hawaii Pacific University women's tennis team.

Lundberg was a semifinalist in the Swedish championships and won 18 tournaments. Paulie won 13 individual titles.

"Lundberg and Paulie are very good athletes," HPU coach Henry Sommerville said. "They both bring international level of competition and will add much needed depth to our lineup. Both are projected to be impact players."
