Acia, Fite tied in senior club pro championship

Hilo's Rodney Acia and Kauai's Rich Fite shot 1-over-par 73 yesterday to tie for first place in the opening round of the Aloha Section PGA/Callaway Golf Senior Club Professional Championship at Mauna Lani Resort on the Big Island.

Steven Hookano and Ron Kiaaina Jr., are tied for second at 75. The tournament concludes today at Mauna Lani's South Course.

The top three finishers qualify for the National Senior CPC to be held Oct. 21-24 in Port St. Lucie, Fla. A fourth berth will be awarded to the senior division winner of the Mauna Kea Resort Stroke Play Championship next month.

Gomi and Fujita win ESPN Challenge qualifier

The team of Clayton Gomi and Del Marc Fujita edged Maui's Aaron Caulford and Ken Houpo to win the regional qualifier for the ESPN National Golf Challenge yesterday at Turtle Bay Resort.

Raymond Primacio and John Evans finished third in the gross division in the two-person, better-ball tournament. The husband-and-wife team of Ben and Rosaline Pule won the net division.

The regional winners in both divisions advance to the national finals set for Oct. 1-2 at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Fla. The national champions receive an ESPY award.
