Could you be queen?

The Chinese Chamber of Commerce of Hawaii is looking for contestants for its 56th Annual Narcissus Queen Pageant, to be held Jan. 15.

Contestants must be between 19 and 26 years old, at least half Chinese and a resident of Hawaii for at least six months. July 31 is the deadline to enter.

The Narcissus Queen and her court will serve as representatives of the Chinese community in Hawaii at various functions and events held throughout the year.

The pageant consists of four phases: judges' interview, talent, Chinese evening gown and onstage speech. Prizes for the queen and her court include tuition scholarships, travel expense for the Narcissus Goodwill Tour to China, gift certificates and many more.

In the four months leading up to the pageant, contestants will take part in cultural classes and activities, including martial arts, lion dance, calligraphy, narcissus bulb carving and mahjong.

Reigning queen Kerri Ching and 54th Narcissus queen Kathleen Wong will answer questions about the pageant from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Oahu Country Club. Call 349-5414.

Who loves ya?

You find the love of your life and hope it lasts forever. But after five years, the sex is far from mind-blowing, and conversation revolves around whose turn it is to take out the trash.

Couple burnout will be the subject of a symposium entitled "Innovative Approaches to Treating Couples: Overcoming Barriers to Intimacy," at the Hawai'i Convention Center from 8 a.m. to 4:50 p.m. July 28 in the Oahu Room. It is part of the American Psychological Association Convention.

Authors and relationship experts Lisa Firestone, Joyce Catlett, Ayala Malach-Pines and Jon Carlson will discuss why and how we choose our partners, how these choices affect relationships and ways couples can learn to communicate effectively.

On-site registration will be open to APA members, fellows or associates; APA community college teacher affiliates; and current and new international affiliates at $240. Nonmembers will be charged $270; APA student affiliates, $70; full-time students and APA high school teacher affiliates, $95; and nonmember, nonpsychologists' spouses, partners and dependents under 18, $10.

To attend the July 28 symposium only, contact the APA via its Web site, www.apa.org.
