UH's Chang named to O'Brien Award watch list

Hawaii quarterback Tim Chang was one of 42 named this week to the preseason watch list for the 2004 Davey O'Brien National Quarterback Award.

The award is given annually by the Davey O'Brien Foundation. O'Brien was an All-American and 1938 Heisman Trophy winner for Texas Christian. He also led the Horned Frogs to an undefeated season and national championship in 1938.

Chang is already UH's all-time passing leader and is expected to break Ty Detmer's NCAA record for career passing yards this season.

Tulsa's James Kilian and Fresno State's Paul Pinegar also made the preseason list, as did former UH opponents Brodie Croyle of Alabama, Gino Guidugli of Cincinnati and Matt Leinart of Southern California.

The field will be narrowed to semifinalists, then finalists, in November, and the winner will be announced Dec. 9. The winner will be honored in February at the annual O'Brien Awards Dinner in Fort Worth, Texas.

He is officially listed as day-to-day.
