Meeting to determine
reopening of Palolo pool

City officials and the construction company contracted to renovate Palolo Valley District Park's swimming pool are set to meet this week and discuss whether the entire pool needs to be re-tiled.

If an agreement can be reached that allows only a portion of the pool to be redone, the pool could be reopened by early next month.

Palolo pool closed in August and was set to reopen in February.

"We're saying replace all of it (the tile)," said city Managing Director Ben Lee, "but we will review the alternatives," which include re-tiling only a section of the pool and extending the pool's construction warranty by one year.

On the advice of a mainland construction expert, the city had said the pool work would not be accepted unless it was completely redone.

But a Hawaii-based forensic engineer hired by contractor KD Construction Inc. says only a small portion of the pool needs to be re-tiled. Officials with KD Construction have said some of the tiles in the pool will not stick, possibly because the adhesive used was exposed to too much rain.

Lee said that he and other city officials will meet with KD Construction today or tomorrow.
