Sardinha will play in all-star game

Louisville catcher Dane Sardinha, a Kamehameha graduate, has been chosen to play in the Triple-A baseball all-star game, Wednesday at Pawtucket, R.I.

Through Friday's International League games, Sardinha was batting .273 with 6 homers and 23 RBI. Sardinha was drafted by Cincinnati in 2000 out of Pepperdine. He played in one game for the Reds last season, going hitless in two at bats.

Suzuki to sign with A's tomorrow

Catcher Kurt Suzuki has agreed to a bonus "in the $500,000 range" and will sign with the Oakland A's tomorrow, Suzuki's mother said.

Suzuki was the 67th player taken in the June 7 Major League First-Year Player Draft. He was picked by Oakland in the second round.

The 2001 Baldwin High graduate was college baseball's most honored catcher this season. He was selected on six All-America teams and received the Johnny Bench Award as college baseball's best catcher.

He drove in the winning run for Cal State Fullerton in the championship game of the College World Series.

Wagner headlines Quarterback Club

Former University of Hawaii football coach and current Kamehameha-Big Island athletic director Bob Wagner is the featured speaker at tomorrow's meeting of the Honolulu Quarterback Club.

Other speakers include Scott Robbs and Lloyd Hisaka.

Robbs is host of KKEA-1420's "Sports Bar" show and the radio voice of UH volleyball.

Hisaka is director of the Hawaii Football Officials Association.

The lunch meeting is at the Pagoda Hotel Ballroom and is open to the public. Lunch starts at 11:30 a.m. and the first speaker goes on at noon.

Eldredge Athletics to host baseball clinic

The second Eldredge Athletics Youth Baseball Clinic will be held July 24 at the Punahou School baseball field from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The clinic is limited to 80 players ages 9-16. The fee is $65 and includes a T-shirt and lunch.

Instructors include Dave, Pal, Duane and Boy Eldredge, University of Hawaii coaches Chad Konishi and Keith Komeiji, Mid-Pacific coach Dunn Muramaru, Kamehameha assistant Mark Hirayama and former Punahou coach Mike Moss.

Registration forms can be downloaded at www.eballclinics.com. They are also available at Rainbow Sports and Toy-riffic locations in Kapolei and Mililani. The deadline to register is July 20.

Metzger, Holdren knocked out at Mallorca

Punahou graduate Stein Metzger and teammate Dax Holdren finished 13th in the beach volleyball Mallorca Open yesterday.

Metzger and Holdren, who will represent the U.S. in the Olympics next month, finished 2-2 after a 22-20, 21-15 loss to Fred Souza and Harley Marques knocked them out of the tournament.
