Fern Elementary School students sign-waved and encouraged motorists to slow down yesterday morning in front of their school on Middle Street. Pictured are, from front, Vietmi Nguyen, 9; Jessica Jones, 7; David Anien, 7; and Reina Tolentino, 8. Yesterday's rally was the first AIG Hawaii Hot Spots event of the summer. Teachers, police officers, AIG Hawaii employees and community members joined the students to remind drivers that summer is the deadliest time of year for motorists, with traffic deaths in the islands rising nearly 25 percent in June, July and August compared with the rest of the year.

E.K. Fernandez crew members were busy yesterday setting up rides at Kakaako Gateway Park for next weekend's Kakaako Carnival and Food Festival. Felipe Kuehu looked like he was getting a giant kiss while assembling the Pharaoh's Fury carnival ride.
