Follow that banana!

The 4th annual Jamba Juice Banana Man Chase takes place tomorrow to raise money for Muscular Dystrophy Association of Hawaii, with participants chasing a bunch of runners sporting Jamba Juice banana costumes.

Race participants can run, walk or stroll their way through the 3.1-mile course. The first three men and the first three women in each division to cross the finish line win a year's worth of Jamba Juice smoothies (valued at $240 per winner). In addition, five lucky winners raising $50 or more will be randomly selected to also win a year's worth of smoothies.

After the race, there will be magic by Kaulana; music by DJ Cool E; and balloon sculptures by Balloon Monsoon.

Applications are available at all Oahu Jamba Juice stores on Oahu (except at the University of Hawaii at Manoa), or at www.jambahawaii.com.

The race begins at 7 a.m. at Ala Moana Park, near McCoy Pavilion.

Jill Marie Landis, author of "Heat Wave," and Kristin Hannah, author of "The Things We Do For Love," will appear at Border's Books & Music-Ward Centre to speak and sign copies of their books at 2 p.m. tomorrow.

Rehab open house

The Rehabilitation Hospital of the Pacific will hold an open house in its third-floor boardroom from 10 to 11:30 a.m. tomorrow, for those considering careers in occupational, physical, speech and/or therapeutic recreation, as well as those in the industry looking for opportunities at the hospital.

REHAB healthcare professionals will be available to provide information on the rehabilitation therapies.

Each year, REHAB Hospital helps nearly 9,000 patients rebuild their lives after sports injuries, auto accidents, hip or knee replacement surgeries, strokes and other traumas using specialized physical, occupational, speech and aquatic therapies.

Tahiti fest at PCC

Polynesian Cultural Center will host its 4th annual Te Mahana Hiro'a O Tahiti Festival beginning Monday at the center.

There will be activities daily through July 17 in the Tahitian Village, highlighted by a children's dance competition, with the preliminary solo contest taking place 7:30 p.m. July 16 in the Hale Aloha Theater, and solo finals and group competition beginning 9 a.m. July 17 in the Pacific Theater.

The competition covers two categories of Tahitian dancing: otea or traditional drumming dances, and aparima, or more modern dances performed with music and singing.

PCC director of cultural islands Raymond Mariteragi compares the dances as being "somewhat like Hawaiian kahiko and auana styles of hula."

Admission is $30 general and $25 for ages 3 to 11. Kama'aina showing proof of residency will pay $8 general and $6 for ages 3 to 11. PCC annual pass holders get in free.

Home-buyer seminar

Hawaiian Tel Federal Credit Union is offering two free seminars this month. The first, being held 5 p.m. July 15, will cover buying a home for first-time home buyers. The topic of a 5 p.m.July 20 workshop is refinancing your home. Both will be held at Hawaiian Tel Federal Credit Union's 1138 N. King St. branch.

Magical evening

Step into a wonderland when Foster Botanical Gardens transforms for a Midsummer Night's Gleam July 17.

Magical hours for family fun are 4:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. and includes a jazz band, colorfully clad tribesmen, hula dancers, belly dancers, and a butterfly dancer fluttering to the notes of harp.

Children can enjoy creating handicrafts, a critter hunt, storytelling and more.
