Jordan Segundo proves
he’s still got the ‘Idol’ touch

Welcome home, Jordan Segundo. Segundo recently returned from a California tour. His new CD single "Be the One" is selling out so fast at Tower Records on Keeaumoku Street that the store had to have its third reorder rushed to them. Segundo is recording a full-length CD, scheduled for release in late summer, then he returns to the mainland for more appearances. He also has a new Subway commercial coming out. ...

Train had the crowd on its feet Saturday at BayFest. The band took the stage as soon as the fireworks ended and kept the crowd cheering as they performed songs from all three of their CDs. The crowd sang along to the 1998 hit "Meet Virginia" and a final hana hou song, "Drops of Jupiter." Lead singer Pat Monahan said this was the first time Train had appeared in Hawaii. I hope they come back. ... The $8 concert (admission into BayFest) was the best deal in town this weekend. But beer drinkers may have been a little upset about all the lines. My friends stood in line 30 to 40 minutes, first to buy scrip to purchase alcohol and then in another line to get the beer. One lady was so desperate she bought my cousin's 20-ounce mug of Bud Light for $20 -- $10 more than my cousin paid for it. ...

And the heat is on. Sheldon Lane, associate producer for TLC's "Junkyard Wars," and his crew have turned Pearlridge's Uptown Center Court into a little racetrack. Teams of four or less have 10 minutes to put together a car (the body is pre-made). The object is to add items to the car so that your car is the fastest (force = mass x acceleration). Three teams compete at a time. Saturday morning, team Junk, which consisted of sister and brother Danielle Huang, 9, and Winston Huang, 12, beat the standing record for the fastest car in Hawaii, which was 4.58 seconds. The Junk team came in at 4.56 seconds. Any age can participate. In fact, the Junk team beat the Yellow team, which consisted of the Huang's daddy, Charles, and younger sister Chanelle, 7. Everyone receives a prize, and the team with the lowest time overall will receive pocket bikes. Lane and his crew will be here until July 25. For information, call 488-0981. ...

Kudos to Aston Hotels & Resorts Hawaii again. The company has donated more computer equipment, this time to Ho'ala School. ... And congratulations to former Hawaii radio deejay Kari Steele. Beginning July 19, Steele, who does the afternoon drive program for Los Angeles' KBIG station, will join the station's "Charlie Tuna in the Morning" lineup.
