Fans bummed
as Keys cancels

LOCAL FANS of R&B singer Alicia Keys who showed up at the Blaisdell box office on Saturday were in for a big disappointment, as word apparently didn't get out fast enough that her scheduled concert next month with Twista and Christina Milian at the Blaisdell Arena had been canceled.

After first hearing that tickets would be available on Thursday, I was told they would go on sale Saturday at 9 a.m. But I started to hear the rumblings on Friday, and a staff member at the Blaisdell confirmed that the show was off that afternoon ...

NEWS OF the cancellation comes as another pair of shows have tickets going on sale this Saturday.

You've probably already heard about Jack Johnson's return to Oahu on Aug. 10. He'll perform at the Hawaii Theatre with guest Donavan Frankenreiter, and will also present a screening of the surf documentary "A Broke Down Melody."

Tickets are $28 and $38, and include a $2 restoration fee. Call 528-0506 to charge by phone, or visit www.hawaiitheatre.com.

Also announced last week was a concert by Michelle Branch on July 29 at the Waikiki Shell. With a Grammy Award under her belt and the admiration of artists such as Sheryl Crow, Dave Navarro and Carlos Santana, the 20-year-old is making her first visit to the islands.

Tickets are $20 to $35 for this one, and will be available at Ticketmaster outlets. Call 877-750-4400 to order by phone ...

FROM WHAT I heard, last weekend's Bayfest was a big draw for Windward residents, with Liz Phair's performance getting rave reviews.

I was planning on checking things out on Saturday, but after making my way to the Wave Waikiki for Amplified's set on Friday night, I realized I already had my share of hard rock and drunk military guys for the weekend.

Getting to the club a couple of hours before my customary post-2 a.m. arrival also meant having a chance to hear DJ Epic One throw down upstairs before DJ Jrama got on the decks. Epic One hooked me up with some mixed CDs, which ended up in my truck as the soundtrack for the rest of my weekend ...

DA SCOOPS: Word has it that the Beach House is no more, with Mass Appeal Entertainment moving its events to nearby Don Ho's Island Grill ... Nightcrawlers continue to mourn the closing of Denny's at the Diamond Head end of Waikiki. The restaurant was a longtime favorite of the up-all-night crowd, including yours truly ... Island diva Melveen Leed continues to recover from a recent Los Angeles hospitalization, which resulted in more than $40,000 in medical bills. A benefit golf tournament is scheduled for Monday afternoon, and a benefit concert will take place on July 25. Call 864-5454 ...
