Train's Pat Monahan will sing the song "Ordinary" from the "Spider-Man 2" soundtrack during their concert tomorrow with drummer Scott Underwood and guitarist Jimmy Stafford backing him up.

Train keeps rollin’

The Grammy-winning band
will be playing at BayFest

Pat Monahan relates to Peter Parker. Comparing the lives of the lead singer of Train to the emotionally unsure alter-ego of Spider-Man may not be much of a stretch. "Ordinary," one of the featured songs in the summer blockbuster "Spider-Man 2," is a Train song specifically written with the Parker character in mind, with such lyrics as "I'm anything but ordinary" and "I'm trying to save the world for you," "you" meaning love interest Mary Jane Watson.

And "Ordinary" is already in the band's setlist, which will be sung and played in all its aural drama come tomorrow night on the BayFest outdoor concert stage at Kaneohe Marine base.

Originally from San Francisco, Train has had a pretty blessed career, finding success foursquare as a notable mainstream rock band. It all started with "Drops of Jupiter," the title track and single of their double-platinum selling 2001 sophomore album, which garnered a Grammy award for Best Rock Song.

It was "repeat formula" for last year's follow-up album "My Private Nation" (its meticulous studio sound courtesy, once again, by producer-with-touch-of-platinum Brendan O'Brien) and Grammy nominations for its leadoff anthem "Calling All Angels," a song still in the top 10 of Billboard's Hot Adult Contemporary singles.

Celebrating its 10th year of existence, the core Train trio of big-voice singer Monahan, guitarist Jimmy Stafford and drummer Scott Underwood is rounded out by new bassist Johnny Colt (formerly of The Black Crowes) and keyboardist Brandon Bush.

Speaking from a tour stop in Colorado Springs, Colo., Monahan said that after the initial success of "Drops of Jupiter," "we always want to succeed again, and make another successful run. We sold our first million with our first album (that had the single 'Meet Virginia') that we produced ourselves. But when we were nominated for five Grammies for 'Drops of Jupiter,' I admit that it was overwhelming, being four times more than we thought we would get. But to win one was great ... not a lot of bands that are around can claim to have ever won a Best Rock Song Grammy."

The band's involvement with the latest Spider-Man movie came about when their record company came to them to write a song specifically for the movie. After previewing the movie and writing several songs afterwards, "Ordinary" was chosen for the soundtrack.

When asked if he felt a particular affinity for the character, Monahan said "I can relate to Peter Parker in a lot of ways. When it comes to being in a rock band, and my going through a divorce right now, it's difficult to be a normal guy. Peter Parker, in his dealing with being a superhero, that side of him is competing with normalcy as well, but it all boils down to being comfortable with being who what you are and going with it."

Monahan also wants the audience to recognize Train as a viable band in concert.

"We've been through a lot, and while we're pegged as a successful band in the adult contemporary area, I feel that we have to recover from being just a band that writes hits. In order to re-establish our credibility, people have to see us live. We're first and foremost a rock band -- it's just that it's our ballads that have made an impression on the world," he said.

So it's no surprise that before working on their next studio album, Train will releasing a live album next, "hopefully this fall," according to Monahan.

And you can bet "Ordinary" will be on it.
