Top seeds advance in match-play championship

Top seed Kevin Carll defeated Brad Bowen 2-up yesterday to advance to today's semifinals of the Aloha Section PGA Match Play Championship at Turtle Bay Resort's Arnold Palmer Course.

Carll, representing Ko Olina Golf Club, faces Brian Sasada of Makena Resort in the first of this morning's semifinal matches. Second-seeded Matthew Pakkala of Kukio Club plays Lance Taketa of Hilo Municipal Golf Course in the second match.

Both the semifinals and finals will be played today. The semifinal winners play for the title in the 18-hole final scheduled to begin at 12:30 p.m.

Carll and Pakkala had first-round byes yesterday. Pakkala defeated Beau Yokomoto 2-up in his quarterfinal match.

Sasada defeated Ron Castillo Jr. 3 and 2 in the opening round and Andrew Feldman 5 and 4 in the quarterfinals. Taketa went 19 holes to defeat Tim Herek and later edged Kirk Nelson 1 up.

The Senior Match Play champion will be also be crowned today. Larry Stubblefield upset top seed and defending champion Mike Iyoki in 19 holes to earn a spot in the final. Steven Hookano defeated Rich Fite 2 and 1 in the other semifinal. The final match is scheduled to start at 7:20 a.m.

Waikoloa to host golf-skills challenge

Golfers will have a chance to qualify for a Million Dollar Hole-in-One shootout at the Waikoloa Golf Skills Challenge on Saturday at the Waikoloa Beach and Golf Resort on the Big Island.

The skills challenge includes putting, chipping and longest-drive contests as well as a closest-to-the-pin competition. The winner of the closest-to-the-pin contest qualifies for the hole-in-one challenge to be held July 4.

The entry fee is $10 per contest. The event is a benefit for United Cerebral Palsy of Hawaii. For more information, call (808) 886-7888.

Big Island club hosts 52nd golf tournament

The Big Island Fil-Am Golf Club will host the 52nd Annual Filipino-American State Golf Tournament this weekend at Volcano and Hilo.

The two-day, 36-hole tournament will be held at the Volcano Country Club on Saturday and the Hilo Municipal Golf Course on Sunday.

Fil-Am Golf Club members and golfers of Filipino background are eligible for the handicap-play flights. All others are eligible for the guest flight.

Proceeds will go to benefit local junior golf programs.

2004 Prince Cup at Hilton Waikoloa Village

Japan's top amateur mixed-doubles tennis teams will compete for the 2004 Prince Cup on July 9 at the Hilton Waikoloa Village on the Big Island, and Hawaii's best amateurs are invited to take on those teams the next day in the Goodwill Games.

Six pairs of mixed-doubles teams qualified for the finals by playing in 43 tournaments across Japan.

Tournament officials have issued an open call for Hawaii amateurs to play in the July 10 goodwill event.

Rice athletes sweep WAC's Bates Awards

Rice tennis player William Barker and track athlete Allison Beckford were named the winners of the 2003-04 Western Athletic Conference Stan Bates Award yesterday.

The award honors the WAC's top male and female scholar-athletes and comes with a $2,000 postgraduate scholarship.

Hawaii volleyball player Lily Kahumoku was a nominee for the women's award.
