At Lehua Elementary School yesterday, Kellie Robertson and her 5-year-old daughter, Emma, pulled weeds as part of the Hawaii 3R's program to reduce the backlog of repairs at public schools. Dad Scott and sons Noah, 7, and Connor, 8, also helped, making the day into a family outing. The children attend the school.




Schools receive
$530,000 in grants


Hawaii 3R's has awarded $530,000 to 20 public school to help complete a backlog of repairs.

During summer breaks, volunteers will help in the repairs, estimated at $560 million statewide. The grant will be used to complete $1.2 million in repairs. Projects include painting, recarpeting, retiling, repairing termite damage, installing sprinklers, and renovating locker rooms and gymnasiums.

Yesterday, volunteers from the school, community and COMSUBPAC at Pearl Harbor added the final touches to a Hawaiian garden at Lehua Elementary School. Takano Nakamura Landscaping installed a sprinkler system and contributed more than $1,000 in landscaping design and materials.

Also getting Hawaii 3R's grants are Aiea, Kainalu, Kipapa, Lanikai, Makakilo, Manoa, Maui Waena, Mililani Uka, Mililani Waena, Solomon, Waialua and Waimea elementary schools; Farrington, Kahuku, Kaimuki, Lahainaluna, Leilehua and Waiakea high schools; and Keeau Middle School. Hawaii 3R's -- Repair, Remodel and Restore Hawaii's public schools -- began in 2001 to reduce the backlog and price of school repairs. The program's goal is to match state, federal and private funds with volunteerism.
