Break spurs call for water conservation

Leeward Oahu residents are being asked to conserve water while repairs are being made to a 24-inch break in a transmission line in Nanakuli.

The break occurred just before noon yesterday in the right Honolulu-bound lane of Farrington Highway near Piliokahi Street. Repairs are expected to be completed this afternoon.

Until then, residents from Nanakuli to Makaha are asked to conserve water so reservoirs won't be depleted.

Board of Water Supply supervisor Greg Miyagi said the transmission line feeds the area's reservoir.

"If consumption is too high, eventually we will drain those reservoirs ... that supply the people," Miyagi said.

The Honolulu-bound outside lane near Piliokahi Street was closed late yesterday for the duration of the repairs.

Official urges insurance aid for military

State Insurance Commissioner J.P. Schmidt is asking Hawaii's insurance companies and health maintenance organizations to help the men and women in the U.S. military who are on active duty overseas.

"We appreciate the sometimes thankless duty these men and women in the military perform to protect our freedom," Schmidt said in a statement. "And that's why I'm requesting those insurers and HMOs licensed to do business in Hawaii to show some understanding."

Because these men and women are away for an extended period of time, Schmidt is asking for insurers to :

>> Suspend car insurance temporarily without any penalties.
>> Treat the policyholder as if the coverage were continuous by not raising rates and adjusting expiration and payment dates.
>> Designate a third party to act on behalf of the policyholder and to receive bills and other notices.

Truck theft victim left without pants in Kaneohe

Honolulu police are looking for three men in their 20s suspected of kidnapping and robbing a 22-year-old man early yesterday morning in Kaneohe.

The victim stopped his truck on the side of a road in the area sometime between 1 and 6 a.m. to ask the suspects for directions, police said. The three men got in the truck with him to direct him, then allegedly grabbed the victim and demanded cash and credit cards.

They forced the victim down in the cab area so he didn't know where they were driving, according to the report. They took his shirt and pants and left him somewhere in Kaneohe in his boxer shorts. The victim flagged a passing driver and got a ride to the Kaneohe Police Department.

Police later found his truck abandoned on Anoi Road in Kaneohe.
