3 California bands
booked for KCCN party

FOUR YEARS ago, the KCCN FM-100 Birthday Bash celebrated its 10th anniversary by adding a second concert and turning the party into a two-night extravaganza.

This year, organizers open the door for the first time to acts that aren't based in Hawaii. Three California bands -- Vika and Local Culture, Kon Tiki and Pau Hana -- will travel to Honolulu in order to participate in the Bash at the Waikiki Shell on July 30 and July 31.

Tickets go on sale today at all Ticketmaster outlets, with a discount being offered if you buy seats for both nights of the annual celebration.

Bands scheduled to perform on July 30 include Natural Vibrations, Ho'onu'a, Sudden Rush, Pau Hana, 'Ekolu, the Ke Kai Boys and the Opihi Pickers.

On July 31, Natural Vibes will return for another set alongside Kapena, Three Plus, Na Palapalai (with special guest Keali'i Reichel), Oshen, Keahiwai, B.E.T. and The Next Generation.

Doors open at 4:30 p.m. on July 30 and 4 p.m. on July 31, and in keeping with tradition, the first 5,000 people through the gates will receive a special gift from the radio station. Call 296-1003 for more details about the concerts ...

AFTER WEEKS of fine tuning, Players Aiea reintroduces itself as Panama Hattie's with a grand opening celebration tomorrow night.

Leading the way is Jack Cione, a Honolulu nightlife veteran who opened his first nightclub all the way back in 1958. Along with partners Yemun Chung, Larry Haanio and Vernon Luke, Cione aims to take Oahu residents on a trip to the Caribbean with the new venue.

The grand opening tomorrow night will feature music by Son Caribe, while the rest of the week's entertainment lineup includes music by Aura, Soul Train with Braddah Jake, Kuumba and Shining Star. Call 488-8226 ...

ON SATURDAY, head to the Wave Waikiki for the "Budweiser True Music Challenge" finals, hosted by Star 101.9 afternoon jock Maleko.

After five weeks of preliminary competition, Dub Phylum and Mixed Nutz will square off to see who gets a shot at opening for Liz Phair next week at Bayfest. The winner will also receive a developmental recording contract from Huimusic. com.

Doors open at 9 p.m. for the finals; call 296-1019 for more info ...

ANOTHER NEW party gets its start at the Mercury tonight. "Gripptape," a new monthly dedicated to skateboarders and skating culture, kicks off at 10 p.m. with DJs Manifest and Gary O mixing things up on the turntables ... After touring on the mainland with Jason Mraz and Raul Midon, local boy Makana returns to Oahu to play at the Hard Rock Cafe tomorrow night from 6 to 9 p.m. ... And be sure to stop by this year's Taste of Honolulu on the grounds of the Civic Center -- I'll be hanging out (and stuffing my face) at the Star-Bulletin's booth from 5 to 7:30 p.m. on Saturday ...
