Local ‘reality show’
could be too real
for some couples

TO CHEAT or Not To Cheat: That is the question two couples are wrestling with on "Play'd," a new local reality show created by Sam the Man and Ian Fernandez. The couples split up for one-on-one dates with other hotties and go off on adventures ranging from shark-cage diving to an afternoon at the pistol range. Will they keep what they have or be tempted by a new partner? This isn't the first local "reality" show by any means, but an insider tells me producer/director Fernandez is "pushing the limits, maybe over the edge" with this one. (Does that mean they won't blur out any spontaneous nudity the way the producers of "Real World" and "Survivor" did?). "Play'd" kicks off at 10 p.m. Sunday with a public premiere party and advance screening of the first episode at the Hanohano Room. The show will air at 10 p.m. Monday on KFVE/WB ...

INTERESTING PEOPLE: Standup comic Shawn Felipe, just back from New York City and a gig at the New York Improv, says the thing that impressed him most about the city was the size of its rats. Says they were so big "you could see the muscle tone in their legs!" ... You met him last weekend as suave drummer Buddy Gouda of Lounge Against the Machine, but it turns out "Buddy" also plays hard-driving rock with a band named Dempsey. (Fans of that group know him by his birth name, Chuck Byler). The group's self-titled CD deserves a hearing by Honolulu's rock radio stations. You can beat 'em to it at www.dempseymusic.com. ... Anybody old enough to call himself or herself a nightlife veteran will remember the days with disco ruled the Waikiki club scene and the Hawaii Record Pool dominated the disco scene with a team of top disco deejays that included T.J. "Da DJ" Johnson, Travis Davis, Mike LD Suber, Gary VHP Callicott, Waltzin' Rick Wyatt and Rick "Nails" Lopez. Callicott, who left Hawaii for Hong Kong in 1979, emails that he's been in the club business in Asia ever since, and has a dance club and three bars in Singapore. Old-time disco era nightlifers can reach him at gary@emeraldhillgroup.com ...

HAPPY BIRTHDAY: To Eaton "Bob" Magoon, who is celebrating today ... also to Leo Anderson Akana and Keali'i Reichel (Saturday), Peter Rockford Espiritu (Sunday), and Chuck Anctil (Monday) ...

DON'T FORGET the workers!: In response to a reader's email, yes, we should give credit to the Halekulani Hotel staff for earning the hotel its latest awards for world-class service and, as the reader put it, for "putting up with some of the most eccentric and demanding clients this planet has seen. Some of them stay for months and test the human patience to the absolute max." ...
