Journalism group lauds
Star-Bulletin ‘ice’ series

The Honolulu Star-Bulletin won the top prize for public service reporting for a series on the state's ongoing crystal methamphetamine epidemic in the 2004 Excellence in Journalism Awards presented Saturday by the Hawaii chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists.

"Ice Storm," a staff-wide effort, was published last summer.

The judges wrote: "While several news organizations published exhaustive series on the topic, none matched the thoroughness and depth of 'Ice Storm.' ... The series stood out in its public service by providing deep research and broad context to an issue of import. The series gave readers a sense of the history, impact and cost of meth at a time when Hawaii's leaders convened to seek solutions."

At the annual SPJ awards dinner Saturday night, the Star-Bulletin won nine other first-place awards in categories ranging from spot news reporting and business reporting to column writing, editorial cartoons, page design and sports photography.

In all, the Star-Bulletin won 10 first-place awards and six finalist awards. The Honolulu Advertiser won 12 first-place awards and had 10 finalists.

The annual contest was judged by members of the Ohio, Greater Oregon and Inland Northwest chapters of SPJ.
