Vitale wins Super Brawl 36 main bout

Falaniko Vitale won a melodramatic Super Brawl 36 main event at Blaisdell Arena last night by split decision, beating Yushin Okami's attempts to keep the bout on the ground. The judges scored the bout 29-27, 28-29 and 29-28.

Ryan Shultz of Gresham, Ore., won the 155-pound Extreme Challenge Tournament when Roger Huerta of Minneapolis, Minn., quit in the first round of their championship bout with a dislocated jaw.

The tournament became a mainland duel when Shultz and Huerta advanced uncontested from the semifinals. Two fighters won their first-round bouts but did not come out for their second bouts due to injuries.

Kolo Koka beat Bart Palaszewski but suffered what he called a torn ACL, while Justin James squeaked by Deshaun Johnson, who entered the tournament with only four hours' notice, but suffered an orbital fracture.

Wong's team advances, Metzger's team out

Punahou alumnus Kevin Wong and his partner, Eric Fonoimoana, advanced, while Stein Metzger, another Punahou product, and his teammate, Dax Holdren, were eliminated yesterday at the $360,000 SWATCH-FIVB World Tour event in Gstaad, Switzerland.

Wong-Fonoimoana, seeded 14th, advanced to today's main draw against No. 11 seeds Mariano Baracetti and Martin Conde of Argentina. Yesterday they went 2-1, defeating teams from Norway and Austria, while losing to a team from Germany.

Metzger and Holdren, seeded 13th, were eliminated after losing to teams from Estonia and Austria. They finished tied for 25th, splitting $2,000.

Former Hawaii player Nik Berger and teammate Clemens Doppler, playing for Austria, remained alive after winning two of their three matches yesterday.

Chun, Low qualify for Junior PGA championship

Mari Chun and Jacob Low won the Westfield Junior Aloha Section PGA championship yesterday at Turtle Bay. The 16-year-olds will receive round-trip airfare, meals and lodging to compete in one of the premier events in junior golf.

Chun (70-74--144) beat Kelly Nakashima (74-71--145) by a stroke to earn her spot in the Westfield Junior PGA Championship next month at the Westfield Group Country Club (Ohio).

Low (139) carded a final-round 69 to edge defending champ Travis Toyama (68-73--141) by two strokes.

Kai at U-21 training camp

Natasha Kai is one of 22 players competing for a spot on the United States Under-21 team traveling to the annual Nordic Cup. The training camp started Monday and runs through June 30 at the National Team Training Center in Carson, Calif.

Following this final camp, women's coach Chris Petrucelli will name the 18-player roster that will travel to Iceland in late July for the 14th annual Nordic Cup. The Americans are the defending champions.

Kai, who will be a junior with the Hawaii Rainbow Wahine this fall, is one of five strikers invited to the camp. The others are Jenny Farenbaugh (Stanford), Tara Hurless (Illinois), Manya Makoski (Arizona State) and Kelly Wilson (Texas).

The U-21s are 7-2-2 this year and Kai is the leading scorer with seven goals.

Dad's Day at demolition derby

Hawaii Motor Speedway will host a Father's Day Eve Demolition Derby today featuring a winner-take-all $1,000 purse.

There will also be a full night of stock car racing beginning at 5 p.m. The demolition derby will begin at approximately 10 p.m.

Bench press and strongman challenges today

The Sonny Ronolo Bench Press Challenge and Strongman Challenge are set for today at Windward Mall.

Ronolo is known for having lifted more than 300 pounds at the age of 80. World record-holder Darren Matsumoto is also scheduled to compete, and Doug Gerona will be attempting to press more than 600 pounds.

The Strongman Challenge will be held in the mall's parking lot at 3 p.m., featuring feats of strength in three weight divisions.

The Bench Press Challenge will be 10 a.m. at center stage.

MacGregor to be honored at polo match

The late Bob MacGregor will be honored tomorrow at the Honolulu Polo Club in Waimanalo.

Polo will be played in Waimanalo every Sunday through Oct. 17.

MacGregor was a co-founder of the Honolulu Polo Club.

Blastaz undefeated at Vegas softball tournament

The Blastaz 18-under girls fast-pitch softball team from Leeward Oahu finished 5-0 in the Las Vegas Junior Olympic Classic last weekend in Las Vegas.

Alexis San Nicolas tossed a two-hit complete game as the Blastaz defeated Boulder (Colo.), 4-0 Sunday, one of three victories by the Hawaii team on the day.

Hawaii Select ties at Region IV tournament

The Hawaii Select Men's soccer team has battled to a pair of 0-0 ties on the first two days of the United States Soccer Federation Region IV State Select Team's Tournament.

Hawaii and Arizona could not find the back of the net Thursday and the same held true yesterday when Hawaii squared off with Utah.

Hawaii plays twice today, meeting Washington in the morning and California North in the afternoon.

Flag football league taking registration

The www.darainbow.com Hawaii Flag Football League is taking registration for the upcoming fall season.

The 10-game minimum league starts play in September, with games held at Salt Lake District Park. The registration fee is $850 for 8-man play and $275 for 4-on-4, plus a $100 deposit for forfeit and missed-meeting fines. The cost includes player medical insurance.
