Boehm third-team academic All-American

Hawaii senior swimmer Kurt Boehm was named to the third team of the Academic All-America University Division Men's At-Large. The mechanical engineering major has a 3.87 grade-point average and was a first-team All-District VIII selection.

39 UH athletes named academic All-WAC

Thirty-nine of Hawaii's student-athletes have been named to the Western Athletic Conference All-Academic teams.

To be eligible, a student-athlete had to complete at least one academic year, have at least a 3.2 cumulative grade-point average and participated in at least 50 percent of the team's contests.

The Rainbow Wahine softball team had the most players on the list of any spring sport, led by Tracie Uchima (3.87). Also named were Stacey Ritter, Tara Harbert, Noelle Izumi, Marie Jackson, Justina Kahaku and Ashley Ruff.

The Wahine outdoor track and field team led the list of UH athletes named to the WAC All-Academic teams for freshmen and transfers. Honored were Dana Buchanan, Sharlene Carillo, Patricia Gauthier, Ashley Monfort and Jessica Rohr.

Also honored from the track team were Carolyn Berger, Shayne Enright, Alexis Frederick, Amanda Page and Carin Patterson.

Others cited were:

Justine Boutet, Kimberly Curtis, Lauren Fitzgerald, Paige Mainor Burke Marold, Jamie Migia and Byron Weinberg (tennis); Creighton Kahoali'i and Greg Kish (baseball); Logan Lee, Bobby Nash, Brittany Grice and Amber Lee (basketball).

Also, Buchanan, Carillo, Katherine Flynn and Chantelle Laan (cross country); Dale Gammie, Sara Odelius and Megan Stoddart (golf); Kimi Tiampo (soccer); Mia Broden and Sarah Grainger (swimming and diving); and Kanoe Kamana'o (volleyball).

Several island prep athletes at other universities were also honored: Fresno State softball player Mitzi Ing from Iolani; Boise State women's soccer player Liane Tom from Mililani; and Rice women's tennis player Tracie Chong from Iolani.

Junior PGA Championship qualifier opens

The 2004 Aloha Section Westfield Junior PGA Championship, the qualifier for next month's national tournament, opens tomorrow at two courses.

The 12-under division will be played at the Naniloa Country Club in Hilo, while the 13-17 age groups will play at Turtle Bay Resort on Oahu. The 36-hole tournaments conclude Friday.

The winners of the boys' and girls' divisions of the 13-17 divisions advance to the July 14-17 tournament at Westfield Group Country Club in Westfield Center, Ohio.
