UH basketball coach
search in final weeks

Frazier says he expects
to name Vince Goo's successor
within the next two weeks

After weeks of interviews and telephone conversations, the search for the new women's basketball coach at Hawaii is in its final weeks.

UH athletic director Herman Frazier said yesterday he expects to name his choice to replace retiring coach Vince Goo within the next two weeks. Frazier confirmed that there are three finalists in the running, including Rainbow Wahine associate coach Da Houl and former UNLV coach Jim Bolla.

"We have made a lot of progress and spoke with some very good coaches," Frazier told the audience at the Honolulu Quarterback Club's weekly meeting. "There is no need to hurry on this, no need to box ourselves in on this. We wanted to do it right."

Two coaches who were in contention have since dropped out:

>> Oklahoma assistant Bo Overton took the job at Missouri-Kansas City last Monday.

>> Florida State coach Sue Semrau officially withdrew last week following the death of one of her Seminole players.

Ronalda Piece, a 19-year-old who played in every game last year as a true freshman, died last Tuesday due to a ruptured aorta resulting from an aneurysm.

"If Sue Semrau hadn't decided to stay (at FSU), she would have been one of our finalists," Frazier said.

Frazier would not reveal the name of the third finalist.

Houl, 39, has spent 16 years at UH as a player, graduate assistant and assistant coach.

Bolla has not coached since being re-assigned in the UNLV athletic department in 1996. He coached the Lady Rebels from 1982 to '96 and was UNLV's director of athletic development from 1996 to 2000. He has been in private business since.

The finalists had telephone interviews with the search committee last month.
