Making up
for power loss

"WHEN LIFE hands you lemons, make lemonade."

Local promoter Rick Rock took that adage to heart last weekend, after a late-night power outage caused Pipeline Cafe to close for half the night on June 4.

To make it up to the club kids, Rock and Pipeline decided to offer $1 drinks last Friday from 9 to 11 p.m. I had originally intended to stop by for a quick drink, but the party was banging shortly after 10 p.m.

Throw in a reunion party for Kamehameha's class of 1994 and birthday celebrations for DJ Wu-Chang and 102.7 Da Bomb's K-Dogg, and it soon became evident I was going absolutely nowhere that night -- we ended up closing down the club ...

OVER AT the Mai Tai Bar, Maui represented big time as Kohomua and Ekolu performed tracks off their latest albums, "Reggae Reggae Music" and "Back to the Valley," respectively.

It was the second night the bands played on Oahu last week -- on Thursday, they played at Kapono's during a CD release party for Kani Makou. But Friday had to be quite a rush, as their performances were broadcast live on KFVE's "Hot Hawaiian Nights."

The show, hosted by KCCN FM-100's Billy V, Lina Girl and Pipi, takes next week off, but returns to the Mai Tai Bar June 25 with a live set by Ho'onu'a ...

AND AFTER an almost three-month hiatus, Microscopic Syllables performed late Friday night as part of Kavet the Catalyst's "Trip the Lights" party at Studio 1.

No longer with the group are percussionist Lahela Hekekia and bassist Josh Conley; MC Seph 1, DJ A2Z, drummer Kelii Wong and guitarist/keyboardist Alex Akamine remain. I'm also told vocalist Maria Remos will come on board when they return to the studio to record later this year ...

IT MIGHT not have been in the country, but Saturday's Makaha Sons concert at the Waikiki Shell was just what the doctor ordered.

I've been jonesing for traditional Hawaiian music lately, and the guys didn't disappoint -- they even brought Aunty Genoa Keawe and Robert Cazimero on stage to perform during their headlining set. It was also great to see Willie K and Amy Hanaiali'i Gilliom performing live again ...

NIGHT NOTES: Spotted at Zanzabar during the Artist Groove Network's new Friday night party: KGMB's Walter Makaula, KHNL's Cindy Paliracio and KHON's Wailele Sallas ... No, there wasn't a bomb threat at "Feng Shui" on Saturday night. According to the Architech's Blaise Sato, it was a fire code violation that shut things down early ... Bad news for fans of Old School Bar and Grill in Manoa -- the former Players University location closed down a couple of weeks back after running into problems with tax payments ...
