Kailua wins own regatta

Kailua Canoe Club took advantage of its home waters, winning 12 of 37 races as well as its own regatta yesterday.

Kailua scored 100 points to easily claim the championships of its King Kamehameha Regatta, the second event of the Oahu Hawaiian Canoe Racing Association season. Last week, Kailua shared overall honors with Hui Lanakila.

Finishing second yesterday was windward neighbor Lanikai (80) with Hui Lanakila third (50).

Sharing the AA title were Leeward Kai and Keahiakahoe with 15 points.

Metzger, Holdren finish fourth in beach volleyball

Former Punahou School standout Stein Metzger and partner Dax Holdren finished fourth in the $180,000 Carolina Open FIVB Beach Tournament yesterday after losing in the bronze-medal match at Carolina, Puerto Rico.

Metzger-Holdren lost to Franco Neto and Tande Ramos of Brazil, 22-20, 21-19, in 59 minutes. The American pair split $11,000.

The SWATCH-FIVB World Tour returns to Europe next week for the final four Olympic qualifying events. The stops are in Switzerland, Germany, Norway and Mallorca.

Hamamoto, Ota earn Publinx berths

Hilo's Jarett Hamamoto and Kauai's Jonathon Ota won their respective tournaments Saturday to earn berths in the U.S. Amateur Public Links Golf Championship next month.

Hamamoto shot an even-par 142 at the Hilo Municipal Saturday to win the sectional qualifier by two strokes. Hamamoto beat out two other Waiakea High graduates, Ryan Masuda and Chris Igawa, who tied for second with 144.

At the Wailua Golf Course, Ota carded a 1-over 145 to win the Kauai qualifier. Casey Watabu shot a 148 and is the first alternate.

Vercruyssen makes trampoline team

Nani Vercruyssen, a recent Hokulani Elementary School graduate, earned a spot on the U.S. Junior National Trampoline & Tumbling Team following her performance at the U.S. Gymnastics Championships earlier this month.

Vercruyssen finished second in synchronized trampoline, fourth in the trampoline and fifth in the double mini trampoline events in Nashville, Tenn. She will next compete in next month's IndoPacific Championships in Canada and the Pan American Games in Florida.

Toyama leads Hawaii qualifiers to Junior Worlds

Thirty-six junior golfers from five different age divisions qualified for next month's Callaway Junior World Championships in San Diego after today's 36-hole qualifier held at both the Kapalua Village and Kaanapali South golf courses.

Travis Toyama shot even par to lead the boy's 15-17 year-old division while T.J. Kua's 150 led the 13-14 boys division. On the girls side, sisters Whitney and Megan Ueno both qualified in the 15-17 and 13-14 age divisions.
