Manoa Valley Church offers musical program

A free concert of gospel music and Hawaiian songs will be held tomorrow at Manoa Valley Church, 2728 Huapala St.

The 4 p.m. choral and handbell concert will feature singers and musicians from the United Church of Chapel Hill, N.C., and the Church of the Crossroads choir, accompanied by a string and woodwind ensemble.

Donations will be accepted to benefit the United Church of Christ transition house for women and children.

Flea market scheduled for St. Andrew's lawn

The lawn of a downtown church will become a flea market next weekend as St. Andrew's Cathedral stages one of the town's largest used-things sales.

Plants, books, toys and collectibles will be on sale from 4:30 to 8 p.m. Friday and from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. next Saturday on the grounds at Queen Emma Square. Also offered will be household goods and clothing for all ages.

Refreshments will be available. There is limited free parking on the grounds.

Bible school starting at island churches

Summer is the season for Bible school at island churches, which package the learning experience as fun, too.

» A visit to "Lava Lava Island, Where Jesus' Love Flows" will be offered at St. John Lutheran Church, 1004 Kailua Road, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. June 21-25. Children will participate in Bible-learning with the use of music, teamwork-building games and a daily challenge to let Jesus' love flow home. They will join in a national mission project for needy children in the Caribbean and Latin America. Family members are invited to attend the nightly Lava Lava Luau. » A "Hero Quest" will be under way at First United Methodist Church, 1020 S. Beretania St., from 5:30 to 8 p.m. July 13-16. Students will explore biblical heroes of faith and discover the faith hero inside themselves in the program of stories, games, crafts and songs. It is open to children from pre-kindergarten through high school. The cost is $6 per student. Dinner each evening is included. Youth meditation sessions are booked

Meditation practices to help young people reduce stress and attention deficiency are the subject of a program opening tomorrow.

Dr. Thanh Huynh, a Honolulu physician, will train young people to practice mindfulness in the free sessions. It is part of a program sponsored by the Hawaii Association of International Buddhists.

Storytelling will be part of the event from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. tomorrow at Kawaiikui Beach Park, on Kalanianaole Highway at Puuikena Drive.

It will be geared for children from kindergarten to sixth grade.

Huynh will lead further sessions for teenagers and young adults from 11 a.m. to noon June 20 and 27 at Jodo Mission of Hawaii, 1429 Makiki St. The program called "Wat's Up in Your Life?" is an Intercultural, Intergeneration Relationship Program of the Buddhist lay association.

Thai Nobel Peace Prize nominee lectures here

A Thai social activist who was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize for efforts to bring educational and economic reform to his country will lecture here this month.

Sulak Sivaraksa, founder of the International Network of Engaged Buddhists, will lead a June 23 interfaith dialogue on "Global Nonviolence and Reconciliation" at the Pacific Justice and Reconciliation Center, 10 N. Pauahi St. The event is free but reservations are required. Call 330-3771. His other lectures are:

» June 25, 7 p.m., Hilo Hongwanji Young Buddhist Association Hall, 398 Kilauea Ave.

» June 27, 11 a.m., Church of the Crossroads, 1212 University Ave. "What Christians and Buddhists Can Learn from Each Other" is the topic of an adult education session.

» June 28, 7 p.m., Jodo Mission of Hawaii, 1429 Makiki St. "Being Buddhist in the 21st Century: The Way of Compassion" is the topic of a lecture co-sponsored by the Hawaii Association of International Buddhists. For information, call 949-3995.

Sulak, an attorney and former BBC commentator, is the author of several books including "Loyalty Demands Dissent" and "Seeds of Peace."
