Uchima, Tabion win Wahine softball awards

Hawaii outfielder Tracie Uchima and pitcher Shannon Tabion combined to win all of the Rainbow Wahine's postseason individual softball awards.

Uchima won the UH Offensive Player of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year, Coaches and Scholar-Athlete awards. She started all 61 games, led the team in hitting and was named first-team All-Western Athletic Conference for the second time.

Tabion, who had a 16-10 record and was named WAC Pitcher of the Week three times, was named UH's Pitcher of the Year.

Wahine Surfing Classic coming up

The eighth China Uemura's Wahine Surfing Classic, a benefit for the Sex Abuse Treatment Center of Kapiolani Medical Center, is scheduled for Saturday and Sunday off Kuhio Beach.

The largest all-female meet in the country, it also features the Battle of Da Kupunas and the Wahine Longboard Pro-Am. Competition begins at 7 a.m. each day.

Junior World golf qualifier at Kapalua

Hawaii's top junior golfers will tee off this weekend in the Junior World State Qualifier at Kapalua's Village Course.

The tournament, for ages 13-17, is 36-hole stroke play Saturday and Sunday. Play for the 120 golfers begins at 6:40 a.m.

Qualifiers advance to the 36th Junior World Championships, July 13-16, in San Diego.

Spots still open for Wahine camps

Applications for next week's Hawaii Rainbow Wahine basketball camps are still being accepted.

The June 15-17 camp is for boys and girls, ages 6-12, for a fee of $75. The June 18-20 camp is for girls age 12 through high school with a fee of $100.

Retiring coach Vince Goo heads a staff that includes UH assistants, current and former Wahine players and Hawaii high school coaches. The fee includes a basketball and T-shirt.

Walk-up registration will be accepted. Applications are also available online at www.hawaiiathletics.com or by calling 956-2710.

91-year-old bowls 286 in league play

Ninety-one year old Seiko Fujiwara bowled a 286 yesterday at the Wednesday Senior Mixed Handicap League at Leeward Bowl.

"Fuji" averages a 173 in league play and practices four times a week. He picked up the sport 30 years ago in order to improve his health.
