‘Baywatch’
to ‘North Shore,’
Brooke’s in the swim


Brooke Burns, who stars in FOX TV's "The North Shore," gets her first cover shot in an upcoming issue of TV Guide. In fact there are two different covers -- one of her in a purple bikini and another in a red one-piece bathing suit. ... I don't think there will be any Bruce Willis sightings here because Burns and Willis have called it quits. Burns says she's available but not looking. Her priorities are her 4-year-old daughter, her job and enjoying Hawaii. ... "Book 'em Danno" -- Well his 18-year-old son will. Jimmy MacArthur and family, who are visiting here through late July, has his son interning at the Outrigger Waikiki, where he will be working in a variety of hospitality jobs for about six weeks. ...

The Makaha Sons VIP party Friday at Sam Choy's Breakfast Lunch & Crab felt like a family reunion, the kind where you don't really know your relatives or how you're related. As a guest at the event, I didn't know many people and when my friend disappeared for a second, one of the members of the Makaha Sons, John Koko, called out to me from the next table, asking if I was OK by myself. While he made his way to my table, artist relations for Aloha Music International Sharlene Oshiro, who helps distribute the Makaha Sons records and who is helping with the PR for Saturday's concert, also noticed I was by myself and made her way to me from the opposite direction. Both were so concerned and filled with the aloha spirit. It's nice to know that the Makaha Sons have been around forever and yet John and Sharlene are so humble. ...

Congratulations to: Maestro JoAnn Falletta, who has been appointed artistic advisor of the Honolulu Symphony. ... Lahainaluna High School senior Ramel Reyes who was presented with a $2,000 scholarship for the Maui Community College Culinary Arts program by Jurg Munch, proprietor of David Paul's Lahaina Grill. ... Local resident Kirby Wright, winner of this year's San Diego Book Awards for his first poetry book "Before the City." Wright is lucky his publisher resides in San Diego, where one of the editors entered his book in the contest. ...

Friday's a holiday for some and there's a lot going on: "Super Size Me," the film that has Morgan Spurlock subjecting himself to a "McDonald's only" diet, opens at the Varsity Theatre; Kalakaua Avenue will be closed in the evening for the Pan-Pacific Ho'olaule'a (Konishiki is scheduled to perform); and Star 101.9 radio has its Band Camp, 7 p.m. at The Beach House with two stages and 12 bands.
