When I heard Tom Selleck was going to play the title role in A&E's "Ike -- Countdown to D-Day," I thought it was miscasting. I didn't think the serious World War II role was Tom's cup of tea. But the former "Magnum, P.I.," star pulled it off and gave a solid performance. It was obvious that Selleck was in command of the role when he turned on the heat in dressing down flamboyant Gen. George "Blood and Guts" Patton early in the show. Gen. Dwight "Ike" Eisenhower was Supreme Allied Commander in Europe and Selleck showed the pressure and strain Ike faced leading up to D-Day, knowing thousands of troops would be killed in the June 6, 1944, Normandy landing. He also came through well in portraying how Ike dealt with the arrogant Gen. Charles de Gaulle, egotistical Field Marshall Bernard Montgomery and other commanders ...

Hawaii's Dr. Goldstein treated Ike in 1963

Dermatalogist Norm Goldstein, who recently received an honorary award in Washington as Physician of the Year from Hawaii from the national Physicians Advisory Council, was an Army captain in Augusta, Ga., in 1963 and treated Ike. Ike was there for the Masters golf tourney. Norm said he was moved by Tom's portrayal of Ike. "Ike was my patient and Tom did a perfect job in the title role," Norm said ...

Jackie Chan will attend the screening of his new film, "Around the World in 80 Days," at the Blaisdell Concert Hall Tuesday at 8 p.m. There is a silent auction at 6 and a program at 7. The word is out that Jackie will sing. Nohelani Cypriano will also sing. Auction items include autographed Jackie's Kitchen chef coats, Hawaiian Jewelry, surfboards and items donated by Jackie. Tickets range from $35 to $100. Jackie is also holding the grand opening for his Jackie's Kitchen eatery while here ...

Janet Akers, a manager at Neiman's Mariposa Restaurant, is walking around with more of a smile on her face nowadays because she has become a granny for the first time. Her daughter, Joylene, gave birth to Hayley Kanoelani Masako Ramos on May 24. Joylene's husband is Craig Ramos ... David Brown is the new G.M. of the Mariposa. He was formerly managing Diamond Head Grill ...
