HPU signs 5 baseball recruits

Oahu Interscholastic Association West Division Player of the Year Spencer Omalza from Leilehua headlines a list of five players who committed to Hawaii Pacific for the 2005 baseball season yesterday.

Omalza finished his senior season with a .500 batting average and compiled a 4-1 record as a pitcher.

Joining Omalza at HPU are Pearl City's Tony Ganigan and Mililani's Pierce Magallan, as well as Josh Guerra and Ryan Duncan from Mount San Jacinto Junior College in California.

The Sea Warriors went 27-27 last year in what coach Allan Sato called "arguably the toughest schedule in school history."

2 Seasiders nominated for athlete of the year

Chelsea Smith of the Brigham Young-Hawaii women's cross country team and tennis player Adrienn Hegedus have been nominated for the 2003-04 NCAA Division II Collegiate Woman Athlete of the Year award.

Smith won the Division II individual cross country championship last fall and set a school record in every race she ran during the year while being named the West Region Female Cross Country Runner of the Year.

Hegedus led the Seasiders to a third straight national title and compiled a combined 45-0 record in both singles and doubles matches. She was also named the Pacific West Player of the Year for the third straight time.

Rainbow sailing first at ICSA championships

The UH Rainbow sailing team is currently in first place at the International Collegiate Sailing Association's North American Dinghy National Championship with one day remaining.

The Rainbows hold a 34-point lead over Georgetown after totaling 67 points in the A division, led by Bryan Lake at the helm and Jennifer Warnock as crew, and 55 points in the B division.

Kapaa student wins tennis scholarship

Kapaa's Ashley Valvieja is one of 23 students who received a $6,000 USTA Tennis & Education Foundation College Educational Scholarship.

Established in 1994, the scholarship promotes, through tennis, educational excellence, good citizenship and self-improvement for at-risk and other special-needs youth.

Aiea looking for bowling, soft tennis coaches

Aiea High School is looking for coaches in boys and girls bowling and boys and girls soft tennis.

Interested parties may send their resume to the Aiea athletic department at 98-1276 Ulune St., Aiea, 96701.

Deadline for resumes is June 25.

USA TV coverage to include Roosevelt alumna

Roosevelt graduate Clarissa Chun will be among those shown when the USA Network presents extensive coverage of the United States Olympic Wrestling Team Trials tomorrow from 10 a.m. to noon.

The event was originally held at Indianapolis on May 21-23. Chun finished second, a step away from the Olympics.

Moanalua, NFL to put on junior football camp

Moanalua High School and the National Football League will conduct the inaugural Junior Player Development Camp on June 14-19 at Moanalua High School.

The free camp for players 12-14 years old includes an NFL practice jersey, football and bag, and is open to the first 180 players to register with completed waiver and medical forms, doctor's physical and proof of age.

Registration will be held June 11 at 4 p.m. at Moanalua's football stadium. Packets can be picked up at the Moanalua football office, or go to www.mohs.k12.hi.us and click "football," then "summer camp info." For information, call Moanalua football coach Arnold Martinez at 368-7673.
