‘Hawaii Skin Diver’ debuts


A new TV show dedicated to freediving and spearfishing, "Hawaii Skin Diver," will premiere at 9 p.m. today on Oceanic Time Warner Cable's Channel OC16. The locally produced, 30-minute show repeats five times a week each month.y at 5 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. Saturday; 10:30 p.m. Sunday; and 6:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. Monday.

Host Merlinda Garma, Miss Honolulu 2003, takes viewers on a 30-minute underwater adventure featuring freediving and spearfishing in Hawaii as well as exotic destinations throughout the world. "Hawaii Skin Diver" will also cover local dive tournaments, share tips and spotlight leaders in the dive industry.

The inaugural episode features Hanalei Adric, Kalei Hina and Jason Hijirida on a trip to Niihau and will showcase Jay and Julie Riffe of Riffe International, a manufacturer of spearguns and accessories. Jay Riffe, who started spearfishing at age 10, set three world records with his handcrafted spearguns.

"We hope the show will appeal to ocean enthusiasts as well as those who love to travel, because we will be featuring many faraway destinations in future episodes," said Kyle Nakamoto of Red Sea Ocean Adventures, producer of "Hawaii Skin Diver."
