Ala Moana owner
outsources cleaning

General Growth Properties Inc. has signed a contract with Team Clean Inc. to outsource janitorial services at Ala Moana Center, a move that will cost 64 General Growth employees their jobs.

Although General Growth has maintained a custodial staff at Ala Moana Center for more than 30 years, the company is going the way of many other large and medium-sized Hawaii companies who outsource janitorial work, said Dwight Yoshimura, senior vice president and general manager of General Growth Properties.

Most of the employees who are being terminated by General Growth will find employment with the contractor, Yoshimura said.

"The current contractor has taken applications from the employees," he said. "The job market is pretty tight right now; most of them will probably be offered work."

Although the company has used contractors to handle landscaping at Ala Moana and other specialty needs, this is the first time it has contracted janitorial services, Yoshimura said. The move was designed to allow General Growth to concentrate on property management and leasing, he said.
