Defending champions repeat

Chad Hawker and Paula Newby-Fraser successfully defended their titles yesterday at the 22nd annual Keauhou Kona Triathlon in Kona.

This was Hawker's sixth straight victory in the event, beating Jeff Sanders of Maui by nine minutes with a time of 4:23. Kailua-Kona's Jonathan Barber was third with a time of 4:38.

Newby-Fraser, an eight-time Ironman champion, won her second straight title by edging Michelle Gwozdo by six minutes with a time of 4:49. Sherry Coons finished in third with a time of 4:58.

UH hoops camp opens June 9

Applications are still being accepted for the University of Hawaii Boys and Girls Basketball Camp.

The camp will be led by UH coach Riley Wallace and the Rainbow Warrior staff along with current and former UH players and high school coaches.

The camp is open to those ages 5 to 17. The first session is June 9-11, the second runs June 12-14. Instruction runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day at the Stan Sheriff Center, Klum Gym, Gym I and Gym II.

The fee is $150. Each camper will receive a basketball and T-shirt.

Entries closing for Kamehameha tournament

Entries for the Kamehameha Adult Basketball Tournament are due by Tuesday.

The event has open and recreation divisions and is scheduled for June 19-20 at the Kekuhaupi'o Gym. The tournament is limited to 24 teams.

The entry fee is $125 per team. Teams are guaranteed four games with certified officials.

Aloha State Games coming up

Registration booklets for the 2004 Aloha State Games will be available at all Hawaii Jamba Juice locations beginning June 4.

The Games open with springboard diving at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex on June 6 and conclude with equestrian at Barbers Point Stables on July 25-26. In the seven weeks in between, competition in 22 other sports will be offered.

Other sports offerings are: bowling, free diving, fencing, inline hockey, horseshoes, judo, kart racing and shooting (action pistol, bulls-eye pistol, rifle, metallic silhouette and sporting clays). Also, slow-pitch softball, swimming, table tennis, 10K run, tennis, track and field, volleyball, weightlifting and wrestling, both Greco and freestyle.
