Clayton Hee says he will
run for state Senate

Clayton Hee, former state senator and Office of Hawaiian Affairs chairman, says he is running for the Windward state Senate seat now held by Sen. Melody Aduja (D, Kahuku-Kaneohe).

Hee said he is supported by former Board of Education Chairwoman Debi Hartman and Garrett Toguchi, who is now on the Board of Education.

"Education will remain the number one priority for me," said Hee, who is also a former public school teacher.

Several other candidates have expressed interest in the race, but so far Aduja, who is finishing her first term in the Senate, is the only candidate to file for the race.

Mazie pushes pro-choice

Mazie Hirono, former lieutenant governor, is helping to sponsor a political action committee to support Democratic women candidates who are pro-choice.

The committee, named in honor of the late U.S. Rep. Patsy Mink, is expected to raise about $50,000, said Hirono, who lost the 2002 race for governor to Republican Linda Lingle.

Hirono said the first donations would go to Rep. Marilyn Lee (D, Mililani-Mililani Mauka) and Sen. Roz Baker (D, Honokohau-Makena).
