Hawaii Beat

Kai scores again for U.S., but it's not enough

Natasha Kai scored her team-leading seventh goal for the United States Under-21 Women's National Team yesterday, but it was not enough.

The Brazilian National Team that is headed to the Olympics in Greece handed the Americans their first defeat of the year 2-1 at Aguas de Lindoia in the state of Sao Paulo.

The teams had played to a 0-0 tie Thursday, a match that saw Kai play the first 63 minutes.

Brazil built a 2-0 lead at the half yesterday on goals in the 39th and 41st minutes.

Kai, who played the first 85 minutes, cut the deficit in half with her goal in the 62nd minute off an assist by Kelly Wilson.

Despite dominating the match statistically, including a 15-5 advantage on shots and a 6-1 bulge in corner kicks, the Americans could not connect for a second goal.

The U21s finished the Brazil trip with a 2-1-1 record. The next training camp is June 21-30 at the Home Depot Training Center at Carson, Calif.

UH's Young beats personal best

Hawaii freshman Kelly Young finished sixth with a time of 2:06.87 in the finals of the 800-meter run at the NCAA Western Regionals yesterday at the Matador Track in Northridge, Calif.

Young finished just one spot short of qualifying for the NCAA Championships, June 9-12, at Austin, Texas. Hawaii earned three team points for her finish, marking the first time Hawaii has scored a point in a regional.

Teammate Dana Buchanan finished 11th in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 4:32.20.

Shimozaki earns spot in Championship

Kihei's Mariko Shimozaki carded a 4-over-par 76 for third place in yesterday's Public Links qualifying tournament at The Bay Course in Kapalua.

Kelly Nakashima and Desiree Ting outshot Shimozaki with scores of 75, but declined their spots in the Women's Amateur Public Links Championship due to scheduling conflicts. Rose Pagan of Kula placed fourth with a score of 80, earning her the second spot for the championship.

The championship will be played June 22-27 at the Golden Horseshoe Golf Club in Williamsburg, Va.
