UH coach field to
be narrowed to 2

The process of selecting a new women's basketball coach at Hawaii will continue next week with face-to-face interviews of two finalists.

Although the names have not been made public, current Rainbow Wahine assistant Da Houl confirmed that she was interviewed Tuesday morning. The Star-Bulletin has also learned that the three other candidates interviewed were:

» Current Florida State head coach Sue Semrau;

» Former UNLV head coach Jim Bolla;

» And Oklahoma assistant Bo Overton.

All four were interviewed by the eight-member selection committee via teleconference to make the process fair for both local and mainland candidates.

The field was narrowed from some 70 applicants in the search to replace Vince Goo, who retired after 17 years this past March.

Athletic director Herman Frazier, in Philadelphia for a funeral this weekend, will meet with the two finalists next week on the Manoa campus. The final choice will not be presented at next week's Board of Regents meeting, as previously reported.

However, the approval of Goo's contract -- a one-year extension that runs through this August -- is on next week's agenda.

Houl has been part of the Wahine program for 16 years, first as a player from 1983 to '87. She joined the coaching staff in 1992 as a part-time assistant and was named associate coach several years ago.

Semrau, at FSU for the past seven seasons, played for Puget Sound and UC San Diego in the 1980s. Her coaching experience includes assistant jobs at Wisconsin and Northern Illinois and the head job at Occidental.

Overton was a starting guard for the Sooners and played in the 1982 Rainbow Classic. He has been an assistant with the Oklahoma women's team since the 1998-99 season.

Bolla has been out of coaching since the 1994-95 season at UNLV. He was the school's director of athletic development from 1996 to 2000 and has been in private business since then.
