Islanders' Robinson joins national honor roll

Hawaiian Islanders defensive specialist Joshua Robinson was named the National Defensive Player of the Week by arenafootball2 yesterday.

Memphis quarterback Brian Jones and Columbus wide receiver/defensive back Terence Samuel were also honored by the league.

Robinson made 12 1/2 tackles against the Central Valley Coyotes, a league-high for the season and a team record. Robinson also recovered a fumble and picked off a pass in the 54-48 blowout.

Robinson is the first Islanders player to be honored nationally since Eddie Klaneski won the defensive award at the end of last season. The Islanders host the San Diego Riptide 6:30 p.m. Friday.

Hawaii's Beth Novick was named to the American Water Polo Coaches Association All-American third team yesterday.

The junior ranks fourth on the school's career goals list with 116.

UH qualifies 4 in track and field regional

Four Hawaii women's track and field athletes will participate in the Western Regional at Cal State Northridge on May 28-29.

It is the largest number of qualifiers in one season under fourth-year coach Carmyn James, who re-started the track and field program in 2001.

Freshmen Kelly Young and Dana Buchanan, sophomore Novelle Murray and junior Tasha Monroe qualified for the regional.

Young qualified in three events, but will concentrate on just one -- the 800-meter run.

Buchanan qualified for the 800- and 1,500-meter runs, Murray will compete in the discus, and Monroe qualified for the long jump.
