Scott, Wong advance; Metzger out

Former Hawaii men's volleyball player Sean Scott and former Punahou standout Kevin Wong were on winning teams in yesterday's opening rounds of the $180,000 SWATCH-FIVB Beach World Tour in Lianyungang, China.

Wong and partner Eric Fonoimoana won two of three matches yesterday to advance, while the team of Scott and Todd Rogers went 2-0. Former Punahou player Stein Metzger and partner Dax Holdgren were eliminated after losing their final two matches against teams from Spain and Cuba.

Fonoimoana and Wong will take on the Chinese team of Linyin Xu and Quiang Xu today in an elimination match.

New MPSF volleyball format approved

As anticipated, the administrative committee of the Mountain Pacifc Sports Federation unanimously approved a new format in the men's volleyball tournament.

The change means the No. 1 seed will have a bye in the quarterfinals and will host the semifinals and final the following week. There will be a play-in match for the Nos. 7 and 8 teams, with that winner meeting the No. 2 seed in a quarterfinal. The other quarterfinals pit No. 3 against No. 6 and No. 4 against No. 5.

The format rewards the regular-season champion as well as gives the school an extra week to promote the tournament. The previous format had the highest-remaining seed after the quarterfinals hosting the semifinals and final.

Ten teams and the top two individuals from non-qualifying teams will advance from the regional to the NCAA Championship on June 1-4 in Virginia. Kodama is currently one stroke behind the second golfer from a non-qualifying team. The third and final round of the regional is today.

Vulcans drop eighth in a row

The Hawaii-Hilo baseball team dropped its eighth consecutive game yesterday, falling to Pace 17-0 at the NCAA Division I Independents Invitational in Greeley, Colo.

Pace starter Patrick Stanley handled the Vulcans (9-42) through seven innings, giving up just a bunt single to Ryan Taiariol and a double to Tom Henderson, while striking out six and walking one. David Chu and Kahe Santos picked up the other two hits off Pace relievers.

The Vulcans close out the tournament against host Northern Colorado (28-23) today.
