Mililani leads Kekaulike
after day 1 of state golf

Moanalua's Ryan Perez and Kamehameha's Chris Caycayon fired opening-round 72s to tie for the lead after the first day of the David S. Ishii Foundation Boys State Golf Championship yesterday.

Dane Serikaku and Bronson Kalilikane shot 75s to help give Mililani a one-shot lead over King Kekaulike in the team standings. Kauai and Waiakea are also within striking distance, just two and three shots back respectively.

It was a tough day for a few league champions, including Waianae's Alvin Okada, who signed his scorecard with an incorrect score and was disqualified from the tournament. Okada shot 76, but the scorecard he signed had him shooting a 75.

University's Travis Toyama struggled on the back nine with a 40 and sits in a tie for 19th place with a 78, while Kauai's Alan Baab shot an 81 after a 45 on the front nine. Honokaa's Sean Maekawa shot a 75 and sits in a tie for fourth place, the highest finish among league champions.
