Konawaena top seed

Big Island champion Konawaena (14-0) earned the top seed and a first-round bye for the Hawaiian Airlines Girls State Division I Basketball Championships that begin Wednesday at the Stan Sheriff Center.

The Wildcats are the only undefeated team in the field.

Oahu Interscholastic Association champion Kahuku (13-1), Interscholastic League of Honolulu winner Punahou (11-2) and Maui Interscholastic League champ Baldwin (14-1) took the tournament's next three seeds and first-round byes.

Wednesday's first-round games are: Honokaa vs. Lahainaluna, Kauai vs. Kalaheo, Iolani vs. Kaiser and McKinley vs. Kamehameha.

The four seeded teams begin play on Thursday. The tournament continues through Saturday's 8 p.m. championship game.

In the inaugural D-II championship, St. Andrew's Priory meets St. Joseph of the Big Island, while St. Anthony of Maui takes on Roosevelt in the semifinals Friday.
