Hawaii Beat

Seasiders advance to NCAA semifinals

ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. » On its annual trek to the Division II national title, the Brigham Young Hawaii women's tennis team rarely runs into resistance. That was certainly the case yesterday as the top-ranked Seasiders routed No. 16 Abilene Christian 5-0.

BYUH lost just eight games in sweeping all three doubles matches. No. 1 singles Adrienn Hegedus was a quick winner in beating Colleen Reynolds 6-0, 6-1. No. 4 singles Judy Weng beat Ashley Hawk in straight sets (6-2, 6-1). BYUH led the other four matches that were halted after Weng won.

"They're a pretty good team. Abilene Christian has some good players but they're not one of the stronger teams in the tournament," Seasiders coach Dave Porter said. "It was a match they figured that it was theirs to lose. It was us against ourselves. The team wasn't good enough to beat them."

That won't be the case today as the Seasiders face No. 2 Armstrong Atlantic State (28-0) at 4 a.m. Hawaii time.

Vulcan's Mason tied for second

DELAND, Fla. » Hawaii-Hilo's Nick Mason recovered from an opening round 4-over 76 to shoot 2 under par yesterday at the NCAA Division II men's golf championship. The junior from Wahiawa vaulted from tied for 33rd place to a three-way tie for second with Marc Peterson (Chico State) and Andrea Signor (West Florida).

Mason is three strokes behind leader Chris McCormick (143) of the University of Charleston. The 72-hole tournament continues today.
