Kailua event to celebrate
traditional chants, stories


Chants and traditional stories of the Kailua Ahupuaa and Kawai Nui Marsh will be performed 8:30 a.m. to noon on Saturday at Ulupo Heiau, next to the Windward YMCA in Kailua.

Kumu Keola Lake and his halau Na Wa'a Lanani will perform chants and hula related to the sacred site. Moolelo, or history as told in ancient times, will be told by Kawao Durante and Muriel Seto, members of the Kailua Hawaiian Civic Club. Kumu Malia Bird and her halau Na Hula Ola ike Ao will also perform.

The event, to be held rain or shine, is sponsored by the Kailua Hawaiian Civic Club, Ahahui Malama i ka Lokahi and the Kawai Nui Heritage Foundation.

Parking is at Kailua Methodist Church.

Visitors are asked to bring their chairs or mats. A donation will be taken to support Kawai Nui's ecological restoration and scholarship program. For more information, contact Chuck Burrows at 595-3922 or chuckb@hawaii.rr.com.
