Pearl City High School has rarely lacked for individual track and field talent in its 33 years of existence. Team league championships were another matter, until yesterday.

The Chargers tripled their total of Oahu Interscholastic Association titles in one sunny afternoon at Mililani, as the boys and girls both won. The Pearl City boys accounted for the school's only other league championship in 1987.

"We've always had top athletes," Pearl City boys coach Donaldo Hopper said. "But we'd have sprinters one year, distance runners another year and jumpers another year. This is the first year we have them all together."

Variety and depth can put you over the top, but no track and field team goes far without a star or two. For the Chargers yesterday, Nathaniel Nasca, Marina Gusman-Brown and Kari Tanimoto were the standouts.

Nasca led the boys with firsts in the 100 (11.16), 110 hurdles (15.05) and long jump (21-3 1/4) and a second in the 200. Nasca individually scored 38 of Pearl City's 104 points, and that's not counting his participation in the third-place 4x100 and second-place 4x400 relays.

Defending champion Kahuku was second with 99 points.

"Give Pearl City a lot of credit," Red Raiders coach Sean Makaiau said. "They've got distance runners and we don't. That's our Achilles' heel."

Michael Hardy's 18 points for first in the triple jump (42-3 1/4) and second in the high jump helped Pearl City offset steady Kahuku scoring in the sprints, throws and jumps. But Hopper said Bryson Pascua's victory in the 800 (2:00.68) was pivotal.

"That was huge for us. He hurt his back wrestling and didn't even run for two weeks," Hopper said.

Pascua said his rehabilitation therapist suggested he not run this week.

"It's kind of hurting now," he said after the race. "But it felt good enough. It felt good, so I pushed it."

Gusman-Brown also fought off an injury. Despite straining her right hamstring in Thursday's trials, she pulled in 40 points by herself with wins in the 100 (12.74), 200 (26.2), long jump (16-434) and triple jump (33-2). She also anchored the winning 4x100 relay (51.70).

Radford's Ryan Shell turned it on on the bell lap of the 3,000-meter run and went on to win the event in the OIA track and field championships at Mililani High School yesterday.

The pivotal point of the girls' meet was Gusman-Brown making up a 15-meter deficit against Mililani on the last leg of the 4x100, her coach, Nathan Aragaki, said.

Pearl City finished with 98.5 points to 83 for the second-place Trojans.

"She's a natural," Aragaki said. "We could've used her in the 4x400, but with states next week we decided not to risk her hamstring."

Gusman-Brown is in her first year of track.

"All my softball friends came out for track for conditioning, so I did, too," said the sophomore outfielder and pitcher. "I think I'll come out again next year."

Tanimoto iced it for the Chargers with wins in the 1,500 (5:07.1) and 3,000 (11:22.20).

Two other girls doubled:

Farrington's Rosela Faaiu won the discus (115-10) and shot (35-834), despite clanging her first throw of the day against the discus backstop.

"I got a little nervous after that," she said. "But I decided to just have fun, and what happens happens."

Waialua's Lorin Millota took the 100 hurdles (15.46) and 300 hurdles (48.93).

"The 100's her real event," coach Sterling Carvalho said of the defending state champion. "The 300's just for fun."

Kaiser set a meet record in the boys 4x100 relay. Michael Alices, Christopher Assily, Vincent Fong and Ryan Paulo posted 43.30 to break the old mark of 43.52 set by Kahuku in 2000.
