RIDDLE OF THE SPHYNX

Pat Campbell held his Sphynx cat, Gina, a hairless cat breed, at the Hawaii Pet Expo 2004 yesterday. Campbell breeds the rare cats and did a presentation during the Aloha Cat Fanciers Parade of Cats exhibit. The owner explained that a natural mutation causes the hairless feature of the Sphynx and because of its bareness the cats have a higher metabolism than most. The cat is ideal for individuals who are allergic to cat dander and hair but won't spare those who are allergic to cat saliva. Because of its rarity, Sphynx cats range from $800 and up for a pet-quality animal and start at $1,500 for a show-quality one.
